Tablet Setup Best Practices for the Kiosk App

Prev Next

This guide defines tablet setup requirements for the WorkEasy Kiosk App, including placement, power, network stability, device restrictions, and routine maintenance. These requirements reduce punch failures, camera capture issues, and unintended exits from the Kiosk App.

If you have not reviewed device requirements, review the following article:

  • Device Requirements for the Kiosk App

Physical placement and mounting

  • Place the tablet at chest-to-eye level.

  • Place the tablet in a visible area used during shift changes.

  • Provide consistent front lighting for photo capture.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, glare, and reflective surfaces.

  • Use a locking wall mount or secured countertop stand to prevent movement, theft, camera misalignment, and cable disconnections.

  • Use mounts that support anti-theft locking, cable management, and portrait orientation.

  • Use reinforced stands or enclosures designed for high-traffic environments.

Power management

  • Keep the tablet plugged in during operating hours.

  • Use the manufacturer-recommended charger.

  • Do not use outlets controlled by light switches.

  • Use surge protection or a power strip in industrial environments.

Network stability (Wi-Fi or mobile data)

The WorkEasy Kiosk App requires an active internet connection to submit punches. The Kiosk App does not allow offline punching.

  • Install the tablet where Wi-Fi signal strength is consistent.

  • Do not use networks that require frequent re-authentication or captive portal logins.

  • If Wi-Fi is unreliable, use a tablet with an LTE/5G data plan.

  • Minimum bandwidth: 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download.

  • In enterprise environments, use a dedicated SSID for kiosk devices when available.

Prepare the tablet for dedicated kiosk use

The WorkEasy Kiosk App does not require OS-level kiosk mode. OS-level restrictions reduce the risk of employees exiting the Kiosk App or changing device settings.

iPad (iPadOS) using Guided Access

Guided Access limits navigation away from the Kiosk App and can disable multitasking gestures.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access.

  2. Turn on Guided Access.

  3. Set a passcode.

  4. Open the WorkEasy Kiosk App.

  5. Triple-tap the Home button or use the Guided Access shortcut to start Guided Access.

Android using App Pinning

App Pinning blocks navigation away from the Kiosk App and reduces accidental device setting changes.

  1. Open Settings > Security > Advanced > App Pinning.

  2. Enable App Pinning.

  3. Open the WorkEasy Kiosk App.

  4. Open the Recent Apps view, select the app icon, then select Pin.

Environmental considerations

Lighting

  • Use even front lighting on the employee’s face.

  • Avoid strong backlighting behind the employee.

  • Avoid shadows across the face during photo capture.

Noise and congestion

  • Do not place the kiosk where it blocks workflow.

  • Do not place the kiosk where it creates bottlenecks.

  • Place the kiosk where managers can monitor punch activity.

Temperature

For best performance and battery longevity, keep the tablet in a climate-controlled environment. The recommended range for continuous kiosk use is 50°F to 86°F (10°C to 30°C).

Security best practices

Physical security

  • Use locking enclosures.

  • Secure power cables inside the mount when possible.

  • Place the kiosk in a monitored area.

Device access controls

  • Enable lock screen passcodes for administrators.

  • Restrict app installation.

  • Disable lock screen notification previews.

WorkEasy usage

Use the tablet only for the WorkEasy Kiosk App and administrator-only device settings.

Routine maintenance

  • Clean the camera lens weekly.

  • Restart the tablet at least once per week.

  • Install OS and app updates based on your change control process.

  • Confirm the device remains plugged in during operating hours.
