Overview
Smart Clocking simplifies the clocking process by showing employees only the relevant options based on their last action. This reduces confusion, minimizes errors, and ensures a smoother, more intuitive experience. Employees can also easily correct missed punches by selecting the next appropriate action.
This feature is automatically enabled for users with the User Selection clocking type, making it available across time clocks, web, mobile apps, and kiosks.

After a missed punch, employees can quickly choose the next step, keeping workflows uninterrupted. - Improved Timesheet Accuracy
By guiding employees through the correct actions, Smart Clocking reduces manual corrections and ensures accurate time entries.
How It Works
Clocking Scenarios
- No Previous Punch
Employees will see the Clock In button. If they missed clocking in, they can click Missed a Punch? and select Start Break, Clock Out, or Transfer. - Last Punch Was Clock In
Options include Clock Out, Start Break, or Transfer. If they missed starting a break, they can click Missed a Punch? and choose Clock In again or cancel. - Last Punch Was Clock Out
Only the Clock In button will appear. If they missed clocking out, they can click Missed a Punch? and select Start Break, Clock Out, or Transfer. - Last Punch Was Start Break
Employees will see End Break. If they missed ending the break, they can click Missed a Punch? and select Clock Out, Start Break, or Transfer.
Enabling Smart Clocking
Smart Clocking is automatically enabled for customers using the User Selection clocking type. To ensure proper functionality:
- Ensure Online Features Are Enabled: The time clock must be online with Online Features turned on.
- Offline Mode: If Online Features are turned off, employees will see all clocking options, returning to the standard experience.
- Update Time Clocks for Smart Clocking: To ensure the smart clocking feature works smoothly, please update your time clocks to the latest version. Our friendly support team is available to assist with the update. If the clocks aren’t updated, only employees using Mobile, Web, or Kiosk will have access to the new smart clocking experience. We want everyone to enjoy the benefits, so feel free to reach out!
Disabling Smart Clocking
If you prefer the previous clocking experience, you can disable Smart Clocking by:
- Navigating to the Reporting Hours settings.
- Enabling the Disable Smart Clocking option (available only for the User Selection clocking type).
This will not affect users with the Quick Punch clocking type.
Missed Punches
Smart Clocking doesn’t allow employees to manually enter times for missed punches. Instead, they can select the next appropriate action:
- Clock Out
- Start Break
- Transfer
If precise adjustments are needed, managers can manually update the time entries in the timesheet.
