You will learn how to create the group structure and add the necessary values so the group can be updated automatically. Once finished, continue to the [custom expressions article](/docs/add-custom-expressions) to learn how to add the rules that determine which employees are included in the group. #### What is a dynamic group? A dynamic group is an employee group that updates automatically based on rules you define. Instead of adding or removing employees manually, the system checks employee data on a schedule and adjusts group membership for you. For example, you could create a dynamic group for all employees classified as hourly, and the system will always keep that group current as employees are added or updated in the system. #### What are custom expressions? Custom expressions are rules that automatically add employees to a dynamic group based on their attributes. Instead of assigning employees manually, you set conditions, such as **employee type = regular** and **pay type = hourly**. The system then checks for matches on a schedule and updates the group automatically. This keeps employee groups accurate without extra manual work. ## Instructions 1. Go to **Platform Settings > Group Structure**. 2. Click **Add**, select the checkbox **Dynamic Group**, and click **Save**. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/88d7ebef-752e-45d9-95e1-ee13bd7279c5/Images/Documentation/image(891).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T13%3A56%3A58Z&se=2026-11-01T14%3A56%3A58Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=gpZ7P6RfvFizsxBn4jxwtXX5NExbLj%2BTY4QwSa4azVQ%3D) 3. Select **Dynamic Group**. 4. Click the ellipsis, and select **Group Structure**. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/88d7ebef-752e-45d9-95e1-ee13bd7279c5/Images/Documentation/image(902).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T13%3A56%3A58Z&se=2026-11-01T14%3A56%3A58Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=gpZ7P6RfvFizsxBn4jxwtXX5NExbLj%2BTY4QwSa4azVQ%3D) 5. Add a new level named **Employment type**, and click **Save**. ![](https://cdn.us.document360.io/88d7ebef-752e-45d9-95e1-ee13bd7279c5/Images/Documentation/image(893).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T13%3A56%3A58Z&se=2026-11-01T14%3A56%3A58Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=gpZ7P6RfvFizsxBn4jxwtXX5NExbLj%2BTY4QwSa4azVQ%3D) **Note:** You do not need to create a sub-level for this setup. The custom expression will manage which employees are added (for example, hourly vs. salaried). Sub-levels are only needed if you want to create a manual, nested structure for additional organization. > If you have questions, call us at (888) 783-1493, email [support@workeasysoftware.com](mailto:support@workeasysoftware.com), or [submit a ticket](https://www.workeasysoftware.com/resources/submit-a-ticket).
